What is a bet builder? How they work, explained

By the SureBetUK team • Updated 18 Oct 2026 • 6 min read

A bet builder lets you combine several bets from the same match into one slip, at one price. Every part of it — every "leg" — has to win for the bet to pay out. You'll also see it called a same-game multi, a request-a-bet or a "build a bet".

A bet builder in one example

Here's a real slip from our own record. On 18 October 2026, before Leeds v Manchester United, our model picked three starters to each have at least one shot on target:

All three had to land for the slip to win, and they did. The model gave the three together about a 17% chance, which makes the slip's fair odds 5.79 — the price at which it would break even over time. A bookmaker's bet builder price for the same three players could be higher or lower than that, and that difference is the whole game.

What you can put in a bet builder

Most UK bookmakers let you combine almost anything priced on a single match:

Player shots on target are among the most popular legs because they don't depend on the result: a striker can have a shot saved in a 3–0 defeat. That's why our model focuses on them. Shots on target betting explained →

Why it isn't just an accumulator

An accumulator combines selections from different matches, which have nothing to do with each other, so its price is simply the single prices multiplied together. A bet builder's legs all come from one match, and they're connected. If Manchester City dominate a game, Haaland is more likely to get a shot on target and so are his team-mates. If you back the under on goals and a striker to score, those two pull against each other.

Because of those links, bookmakers price the whole bet builder together rather than multiplying the legs, which is why the price you're quoted rarely matches the singles multiplied. Bet builder vs accumulator →

How the odds are worked out

Behind the scenes, a bookmaker estimates the chance of every leg landing together, allowing for how they're linked, then adds its margin. The margin is the catch: each leg carries some, and combining legs stacks them up. We've written up exactly how that works from the trading side. How bookmakers price bet builders →

What happens if a player doesn't play?

This is where bookmakers differ most, so read your bookmaker's bet builder rules before you bet. Broadly:

The simplest protection is to build your slip only after the team sheets are out. Our tips are only ever posted once both line-ups are confirmed, so every player we pick is starting.

Are bet builders good value?

Usually not on their own: bet builders carry some of the biggest margins a bookmaker offers. That doesn't mean every price is bad. It means you need a yardstick — a fair price to compare against. That's what we put on every slip we post, and what our free bet builder calculator works out for any slip you build yourself. Are bet builders worth it? An honest answer →

Questions

What is a bet builder in football?

A single bet made of several selections from the same football match — for example three players each to have a shot on target, or a team to win with both teams scoring. Every selection has to win for the bet to pay.

Is a bet builder the same as an accumulator?

No. An accumulator combines selections from different matches; a bet builder combines selections from one match. Because a bet builder's legs are connected, its price isn't simply the singles multiplied together.

What happens to a bet builder if a player is subbed off?

The bet usually stands on whatever he did while he was on the pitch. A player subbed off before landing a shot on target means that leg loses. Rules for players who don't take part at all vary by bookmaker.
